With Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton cruising to victory in last week’s Malaysian Grand Prix and Mercedes teammates Valtteri Bottas and team bosses Toto Wolff and Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche congratulating him on winning his 63rd GP, Bottas wants to help Hamilton lock out the world championship this year.
“I’m in the same position as him [Hamilton],” Bottas said in a post-race press conference. “I have to win races and I think Lewis can win the world championship. So it’s great for all of us. When we came back into the team after last year we were in the same position. Now we are closer than we were then.”
Wolff echoes that sentiment, saying that Mercedes feels like they are “first drivers” in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team.
“I think both are very strong in a different way — one is very fast, the other is better in qualifying,” Wolff said at the season-opening race in Melbourne. “So for me, I’m looking at it from a strategic point of view first drivers in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team.”
As the tour winds down to China on Sunday, Bottas has a strong chance to win his first F1 race. He leads the 2017 standings and was second in last year’s Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit.
